BACKGROUND: Cold stress has negative effects on the growth and health of mammals, and has become a factor restricting livestock development at high latitudes and on plateaus. The gut-liver axis is central to energy metabolism, and the mechanisms by which it regulates host energy metabolism at cold temperatures have rarely been illustrated. In this study, we evaluated the status of glycolipid metabolism and oxidative stress in pigs based on the gut-liver axis and propose that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key target for alleviating energy stress at cold temperatures by dietary fat supplementation. RESULTS: Dietary fat supplementation alleviated the negative effects of cold temperatures on growth performance and digestive enzymes, while hormonal homeostasis was also restored. Moreover, cold temperature exposure increased glucose transport in the jejunum. In contrast, we observed abnormalities in lipid metabolism, which was characterized by the accumulation of bile acids in the ileum and plasma. In addition, the results of the ileal metabolomic analysis were consistent with the energy metabolism measurements in the jejunum, and dietary fat supplementation increased the activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and lipid metabolism. As the central nexus of energy metabolism, the state of glycolipid metabolism and oxidative stress in the liver are inconsistent with that in the small intestine. Specifically, we found that cold temperature exposure increased glucose transport in the liver, which fully validates the idea that hormones can act on the liver to regulate glucose output. Additionally, dietary fat supplementation inhibited glucose transport and glycolysis, but increased gluconeogenesis, bile acid cycling, and lipid metabolism. Sustained activation of AMPK, which an energy receptor and regulator, leads to oxidative stress and apoptosis in the liver; dietary fat supplementation alleviates energy stress by reducing AMPK phosphorylation. CONCLUSIONS: Cold stress reduced the growth performance and aggravated glycolipid metabolism disorders and oxidative stress damage in pigs. Dietary fat supplementation improved growth performance and alleviated cold temperature-induced energy stress through AMPK-mediated mitochondrial homeostasis. In this study, we highlight the importance of AMPK in dietary fat supplementation-mediated alleviation of host energy stress in response to environmental changes.

The Chinese central government has initiated pilot projects to promote the adoption of gasoline containing 10%v ethanol (E10). Vehicle emissions using ethanol blended fuels require investigation to estimate the environmental impacts of the initiative. Five fuel formulations were created using two blending methods (splash blending and match blending) to evaluate the impacts of formulations on speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaust emissions. Seven in-use vehicles covering China 4 to China 6 emission standards were recruited. Vehicle tests were conducted using the Worldwide Harmonized Test Cycle (WLTC) in a temperature-controlled chamber at 23 °C and -7 °C. Splash blended E10 fuels led to significant reductions in VOC emissions by 12%-75%. E10 fuels had a better performance of reducing VOC emissions in older model vehicles than in newer model vehicles. These results suggested that E10 fuel could be an option to mitigate the VOC emissions. Although replacing methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) with ethanol in regular gasoline had no significant effects on VOC emissions, the replacement led to lower aromatic emissions by 40%-60%. Alkanes and aromatics dominated approximately 90% of VOC emissions for all vehicle-fuel combinations. Cold temperature increased VOC emissions significantly, by 3-26 folds for all vehicle/fuel combinations at -7 °C. Aromatic emissions were increased by cold temperature, from 2 to 26 mg/km at 23 °C to 33-238 mg/km at -7 °C. OVOC emissions were not significantly affected by E10 fuel or cold temperature. The ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) of splash blended E10 fuels decreased by up to 76% and 81%, respectively, compared with those of E0 fuels. The results are useful to update VOC emission profiles of Chinese vehicles using ethanol blended gasoline and under low-temperature conditions.

A polar plunge is a term referring to an ice-cold water immersion (CWI), usually in the winter period. It is also a part of a specific training program (STP) which currently gains popularity worldwide and was proven to display paradigm-shifting characteristics. The aim of this study was to compare the indices of mental functioning (including depression, anxiety, mindfulness) and duration of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) measured among the study participants. A set of questionnaires was distributed via the Internet. Participants declaring regular STP practice were selected (N = 77). Two groups were matched based on a case-control principle: the first one (the control group) comprised participants who did not declare nor CWI practice, nor STP practice. The second one comprised participants declaring regular CWI practice only. The CWI only group displayed better mental health indices and shorter URTIs compared to the control group. Moreover, the STP group also displayed better general mental health, less somatic complaints, and shorter URTIs compared to the CWI only group. This study suggests the existence of CWI's potential in boosting mental health and immune system functioning, however when complemented by a specific breathwork, this potential can be increased. However, further research is required.

BACKGROUND: Persons with asthma may experience excessive airway narrowing due to exercise or exposure to cold air, worsening their daily functionality. Exercise has several benefits for asthma control, but it may induce airway narrowing in some persons with asthma. When combined with cold temperatures, it introduces another layer of challenges. Therefore, managing this interaction is crucial to increase the quality of life in individuals with asthma. The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable experimental protocol to assess the effects of exercise and cold air on airway narrowing in adults with asthma in a controlled and safe environment. METHODS: This study was a randomized cross-over study in adults with and without asthma. Participants underwent a protocol involving a 10-min seated rest, followed by a 10-min cycling on a stationary bike in different temperatures of 0, 10, or 20  ∘ C. The sequence of room temperatures was randomized, and there was a 30-min interval for recovery between each temperature transition. In each temperature, to measure lung function and respiratory symptoms, oscillometry and a questionnaire were used at 0 min (baseline), after 10 min of sitting and before starting biking (pre-exercise), and after 10 min of biking (post-exercise). At each room temperature, the changes in airway mechanics and asthma symptoms among baseline, pre-exercise, and post-exercise were compared with one-way repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman Rank Test. Within each arm, cardiac and thoraco-abdominal motion respiration signals were also measured continuously using electrodes and calibrated respiratory inductance plethysmographs, respectively. RESULTS: A total of 23 persons with asthma (11 females, age: 56.3 ± 10.9 years, BMI: 27.4 ± 5.7 kg/m2) and 6 healthy subjects (3 females, age: 61.8 ± 9.1 years, BMI: 28.5 ± 3.1 kg/m2) were enrolled in the study. Cold temperature of 0 ∘ C induced airway narrowing in those with and without asthma after 10 and 20 min, respectively. Exercise intervention had significant changes in airway narrowing in participants with asthma in the range of 10-20 ∘ C. Our results showed that in asthma, changes in subjective respiratory symptoms were due to both cold temperatures of 0 and 10 ∘ C and exercise in the 0-20 ∘ C range. Respiratory symptoms were not noticed among the healthy participants. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our findings suggest that exposure to cold temperatures of 0 ∘ C could serve as a reliable method in the experimental protocol for inducing airway narrowing in asthma. The impact of exercise on airway narrowing was more variable among participants. Understanding these triggers in the experimental protocol is essential for the successful management of asthma in future studies.

BACKGROUND: The association between ambient air temperature and mortality has not been assessed in Norway. This study aimed to quantify for seven Norwegian cities (Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Drammen, Fredrikstad, Trondheim and Tromsø) the non-accidental, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases mortality burden due to non-optimal ambient temperatures. METHODS: We used a historical daily dataset (1996-2018) to perform city-specific analyses with a distributed lag non-linear model with 14 days of lag, and pooled results in a multivariate meta-regression. We calculated attributable deaths for heat and cold, defined as days with temperatures above and below the city-specific optimum temperature. We further divided temperatures into moderate and extreme using cut-offs at the 1st and 99th percentiles. RESULTS: We observed that 5.3% (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.0-8.3) of the non-accidental related deaths, 11.8% (95% CI 6.4-16.4) of the cardiovascular and 5.9% (95% CI -4.0 to 14.3) of the respiratory were attributable to non-optimal temperatures. Notable variations were found between cities and subgroups stratified by sex and age. The mortality burden related to cold dominated in all three health outcomes (5.1%, 2.0-8.1, 11.4%, 6.0-15.4, and 5.1%, -5.5 to 13.8 respectively). Heat had a more pronounced effect on the burden of respiratory deaths (0.9%, 0.2-1.0). Extreme cold accounted for 0.2% of non-accidental deaths and 0.3% of cardiovascular and respiratory deaths, while extreme heat contributed to 0.2% of non-accidental and to 0.3% of respiratory deaths. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the burden could be attributed to the contribution of moderate cold. This evidence has significant implications for enhancing public-health policies to better address health consequences in the Norwegian setting.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the correlation between temperature and testicular torsion in Jiaodong Peninsula which has temperate continental monsoon climate and is represented by Yantai and its surrounding areas. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted by reviewing clinical data of 292 patients who were admitted and surgically confirmed to have testicular torsion in the Yantai Yuhuangding hospital medical complex between January 1, 2009, and August 31, 2022. Male patients who underwent circumcision (foreskin) were allocated to the control group. Temperature data were obtained from the China Meteorological Data Service Center. Chi-squared test or Fisher's exact test and one-way analysis of variance were employed to compare patient characteristics and climatic variables among the different groups. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to analyze the association between monthly average ambient temperature and monthly cumulative number of cases. Moreover, a logistic regression model was utilized to identify the independent factors of testicular torsion. RESULTS: The mean age of patients with testicular torsion was 16.8 years. The number of cases was the highest in autumn. The temperature was the highest in summer and the lowest in winter (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the temperature difference (TD) in autumn was the highest in the four seasons groups (p < 0.01). The patients were divided into the high TD and low TD groups according to the mean TD (7.62 ◦C) on the admission day. The high TD group had a higher number of patients than the low TD group, and the temperature was lower in the former group than in the latter group (p < 0.01). A roughly negative correlation was observed between ambient temperature and the number of cases (Pearson's r = -0.228, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.366 to -0.079, p = 0.003). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the independent risk factor for testicular torsion was TD on admission day (odds ratio, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.28-2.59; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: To some extent, external temperature can affect the body surface temperature of patients and then induce testicular torsion. We concluded that testicular torsion easily occurs in the season in which the temperature drops and the TD is high.

Breeding early maturing cultivars is one of the most important objectives in pear breeding. Very early maturing pears provide an excellent parental material for crossing, but the immature embryo and low seed germination of their hybrid progenies often limit the selection and breeding of new early maturing pear cultivars. In this study, we choose a very early maturing pear cultivar 'Pearl Pear' as the study object and investigate the effects of cold stratification, the culture medium, and the seed coat on the germination and growth of early maturing pear seeds. Our results show that cold stratification (4 °C) treatment could significantly improve the germination rates of early maturing pear seeds. A total of 100 days of cold-temperature treatment in 4 °C and in vitro germination on White medium increased the germination rate to 84.54%. We also observed that seed coat removal improved the germination of early maturing pear seeds, with middle seed coat removal representing the optimal method, with a high germination rate and low contamination. The results of our study led to the establishment of an improved protocol for the germination of early maturing pear, which will greatly facilitate the breeding of new very early maturing pear cultivars.

This study investigated the efficacy of a novel Salmonella phage with depolymerase activity to control S. Typhimurium (ST) and its biofilm on cantaloupes, for the first time, under simulated cold temperature. vB_SalA_KFSST3 forming a halo zone was isolated and purified from a slaughterhouse with a final concentration of 12.1 ± 0.1 log PFU/mL. Based on the morphological and bioinformatics analyses, vB_SalA_KFSST3 was identified as a novel phage belonging to the family Ackermannviridae. Before employing the phage on cantaloupe, its genetic characteristics, specificity, stability, and bactericidal effect were investigated. Genetic analyses confirmed its safety and identified endolysin and two depolymerase domains possessing antibiofilm potential. In addition, the phage exhibited a broad specificity with great efficiencies toward five Salmonella strains at 4 °C, 22 °C, and 37 °C, as well as stable lytic activity over a wide range of pHs (3 to 11) and temperatures (-20 °C to 60 °C). The optimal multiplicity of infection (MOI) and exposure time of phage were determined to be 100 and 2 h, respectively, based on the highest bacterial reduction of ∼2.7 log CFU/mL. Following the formation of ST biofilm on cantaloupe at 4 °C and 22 °C, the cantaloupe was treated with phage at an MOI of 100 for 2 h. The antibiofilm efficacy of phage was evaluated via the plate count method, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The initial biofilm population at 22 °C was significantly greater and more condensed than that at 4 °C. After phage treatment, biofilm population and the percentage of viable ST in biofilm were reduced by ∼4.6 log CFU/cm2 and ∼90% within 2 h, respectively, which were significantly greater than those at 22 °C (∼2.0 log CFU/cm2 and ∼45%) (P < 0.05). SEM images also confirmed more drastic destruction of the cohesive biofilm architecture at 4 °C than at 22 °C. As a result of its cold temperature-robust lytic activity and the contribution of endolysin and two depolymerases, vB_SalA_KFSST3 demonstrated excellent antibiofilm efficacy at cold temperature, highlighting its potential as a promising practical biocontrol agent for the control of ST and its biofilm.

SUMMARY: For the purposes of teaching anatomy, the use of cadaver preparations is considered the most efficient way of ensuring that students retain knowledge. Nevertheless, in Ecuador the use of animal specimens in universities must comply with the internationally accepted principles of replacement, reduction and refinement (3Rs). Plastination is an alternative technique which allows organs to be conserved in the long term and complies with the 3Rs. The object of the present work was to use cold-temperature silicone plastination with Biodur® products to obtain long-lasting, easy-to-handle canine organs for use as tools for the teaching of animal anatomy. Six canine cadavers were obtained from local animal protection charities. The hearts, brains and kidneys of the cadavers were dissected and fixed with formaldehyde 10 %. They were then dehydrated with acetone at -20 °C. The specimens were impregnated with Biodur® S10:S3 (-20 °C) and finally cured with Biodur® S6. We plastinated six hearts, twelve kidneys, four brains and one encephalic slice of canine. The application of cold-temperature plastination to canine organs followed the parameters established for the conventional protocol, enabling us to obtain organs of brilliant appearance, free of odours, in which the anatomical form was preserved. Thus the technique helped us to comply with the 3Rs, as we obtained easy-to-handle teaching models to replace fresh or formaldehyde-fixed samples for the teaching-learning of the canine anatomy.


En la enseñanza de la Anatomía, el uso de preparaciones cadavéricas se considera el método que permite a los estudiantes retener el conocimiento de una forma más eficiente. No obstante, en Ecuador, el uso de especímenes animales en las universidades se debe realizar bajo el principio internacional de reemplazo, reducción y refinamiento (3Rs). La técnica de plastinación es una técnica alternativa que permite preservar órganos a largo plazo y que se adapta al principio de las 3Rs. El objetivo del trabajo fue utilizar la técnica de plastinación en silicona al frío con productos Biodur® para obtener órganos caninos duraderos y manejables útiles como herramienta para la enseñanza de la anatomía animal. Se obtuvieron seis cadáveres de caninos de fundaciones locales para la protección animal. Se realizaron disecciones de corazones, cerebros y riñones de los cadáveres caninos. Los órganos se fijaron con formalina al 10 %. A continuación, se llevó a cabo la deshidratación con acetona a -20 °C. Los especímenes fueron impregnados con S10:S3 Biodur® (-20 °C) y al final fueron curados con Biodur® S6. Se lograron plastinar seis corazones, doce riñones, cinco encéfalos y un tallo encefálico de canino. La técnica de plastinación al frío utilizada para obtener órganos de canino conservó los parámetros empleados en el protocolo convencional y permitió obtener órganos que presentaron aspecto brillante, ausencia de olores y mantuvieron la forma anatómica. Por lo que, la técnica facilitó cumplir con el principio de las 3Rs al obtenerse modelos didácticos fáciles de manipular que pueden reemplazar muestras frescas o formolizadas en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la anatomía del canino.

Researchers across disciplines are increasing attention to cold housing environments. Public health, environmental and social sciences, architecture, and engineering each define and measure cold housing environments differently. Lack of standardisation hinders our ability to combine evidence, determine prevalence, understand who is most at risk--and to formulate policy responses. We conducted a systematic, cross-disciplinary review of literature to document the measures used. We examined benefits and limitations of each approach and propose a conceptualisation of cold housing: where temperature is too low to support optimal health and wellbeing of inhabitants, measured using one or a combination of economic, 'objective', or subjective approaches. More accurate data on home temperatures for all population groups, combined with an understanding of factors leading to cold homes, will enable appropriate policy response to reduce adverse health effects and costs. Policies targeting better building standards and energy subsidies both improve temperature conditions in housing environments.

BACKGROUND: Extreme temperature events (ETEs), including heat wave and cold spell, have been linked to myocardial infarction (MI) morbidity; however, their effects on MI mortality are less clear. Although ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is suggested to act synergistically with extreme temperatures on cardiovascular mortality, it remains unknown if and how ETEs and PM2.5 interact to trigger MI deaths. METHODS: A time-stratified case-crossover study of 202 678 MI deaths in Jiangsu province, China, from 2015 to 2020, was conducted to investigate the association of exposure to ETEs and PM2.5 with MI mortality and evaluate their interactive effects. On the basis of ambient apparent temperature, multiple temperature thresholds and durations were used to build 12 ETE definitions. Daily ETEs and PM2.5 exposures were assessed by extracting values from validated grid datasets at each subject's geocoded residential address. Conditional logistic regression models were applied to perform exposure-response analyses and estimate relative excess odds due to interaction, proportion attributable to interaction, and synergy index. RESULTS: Under different ETE definitions, the odds ratio of MI mortality associated with heat wave and cold spell ranged from 1.18 (95% CI, 1.14-1.21) to 1.74 (1.66-1.83), and 1.04 (1.02-1.06) to 1.12 (1.07-1.18), respectively. Lag 01-day exposure to PM2.5 was significantly associated with an increased odds of MI mortality, which attenuated at higher exposures. We observed a significant synergistic interaction of heat wave and PM2.5 on MI mortality (relative excess odds due to interaction >0, proportion attributable to interaction >0, and synergy index >1), which was higher, in general, for heat wave with greater intensities and longer durations. We estimated that up to 2.8% of the MI deaths were attributable to exposure to ETEs and PM2.5 at levels exceeding the interim target 3 value (37.5 µg/m3) of World Health Organization air quality guidelines. Women and older adults were more vulnerable to ETEs and PM2.5. The interactive effects of ETEs or PM2.5 on MI mortality did not vary across sex, age, or socioeconomic status. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides consistent evidence that exposure to both ETEs and PM2.5 is significantly associated with an increased odds of MI mortality, especially for women and older adults, and that heat wave interacts synergistically with PM2.5 to trigger MI deaths but cold spell does not. Our findings suggest that mitigating both ETE and PM2.5 exposures may bring health cobenefits in preventing premature deaths from MI.

The honeybees are the most important pollinator in the production of crops and fresh produce. Temperature affects the survival of honeybees, and determines the quality of their development, which is of great significance for beekeeping production. Yet, little was known about how does low temperature stress during development stage cause bee death and any sub-lethal effect on subsequent. Early pupal stage is the most sensitive stage to low temperature in pupal stage. In this study, early pupal broods were exposed to 20°C for 12, 16, 24, and 48 h, followed by incubation at 35°C until emergence. We found that 48 h of low temperature duration cause 70% of individual bees to die. Although the mortality at 12 and 16 h seems not very high, the association learning ability of the surviving individuals was greatly affected. The brain slices of honeybees showed that low temperature treatment could cause the brain development of honeybees to almost stop. Gene expression profiles between low temperature treatment groups (T24, T48) and the control revealed that 1,267 and 1,174 genes were differentially expressed respectively. Functional enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes showed that the differential expression of Map3k9, Dhrs4, and Sod-2 genes on MAPK and peroxisome signaling pathway caused oxidative damage to the honeybee head. On the FoxO signal pathway, InsR and FoxO were upregulated, and JNK, Akt, and Bsk were downregulated; and on the insect hormone synthesis signal pathway, Phm and Spo genes were downregulated. Therefore, we speculate that low temperature stress affects hormone regulation. It was detected that the pathways related to the nervous system were Cholinergic synapse, Dopaminergic synapse, GABAergic synapse, Glutamatergic synapse, Serotonergic synapse, Neurotrophin signaling pathway, and Synaptic vesicle cycle. This implies that the synaptic development of honeybees is quite possibly greatly affected by low temperature stress. Understanding how low temperature stress affects the physiology of bee brain development and how it affects bee behavior provide a theoretical foundation for a deeper comprehension of the temperature adaptation mechanism that underlies the "stenothermic" development of social insects, and help to improve honeybee management strategies to ensure the healthy of colony.

Nowadays, there is confusing evidence in the literature regarding the association between seasonal variations and events of testicular torsion (TT). We attempted to assess the correlation between seasonal variations, including season, ambient temperatures, and humidity levels to onset and laterality of testicular torsion. We conducted a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with testicular torsion and confirmed surgically between January 2009 and December 2019, at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center. Weather data was collected from meteorological observation stations near the hospital. TT incidents were stratified into five temperature categories (< 15 °C, 15-20 °C, 20-25 °C, 25-30 °C, > 30 °C) and into two categories of humidity (≤ 50%, > 50%). Potential associations between TT and seasonal variations were investigated. Of 235 patients diagnosed with TT, 156 (66%) were children and adolescents and 79 (34%) were adults. In both groups, rate of TT incidents increased in winter and fall months. Significant correlation between TT and temperatures below 15 °C was observed in both groups; OR 3.3 [95% IC 1.54-7.07], p = 0.002 in children and adolescents and 3.77 [1.79-7.94], p < 0.001) in adults. The correlation between TT and humidity was non-significant in both groups. Among children and adolescents left-sided TT was observed in most of the cases, with strong correlation to lower temperatures; OR 3.15 [1.34-7.40], p = 0.008. Higher rates of acute TT were observed in patients admitted to the emergency department (ED) during the cold seasons in Israel. Significant association was observed between left-side TT and temperatures below 15 °C in the children and adolescents' group. Our findings suggest that there might be a predilection for TT occurrence in cold weather, particularly left-side laterality among children and adolescents.

The prevalence of glaucoma has seasonal variation in population, but the role of ambient temperature and its variation remains unclear in this seasonal trend. So, we conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study to examine the association of ambient temperature and temperature change between neighboring days (TCN) with the risk of acute glaucoma. Data on meteorological parameters and glaucoma outpatient visit between 2015 and 2021 covered all districts of Shanghai. Conditional logistic regression with distributed lag nonlinear model was applied to estimate the association of temperature or TCN with the risk of acute glaucoma. A total of 7,746 patients diagnosed with acute primary angle-closure glaucoma (APACG) were included in this analysis. We observed a significant increase in the risk of acute glaucoma with cold temperature and temperature drop. Compared with the referent temperature (32℃), moderate low (12 °C) and extreme low (4 °C) temperature exposures were associated with higher risk of acute glaucoma outpatient visit, with the highest cumulative OR of 1.46 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.91) and 1.50 (95% CI: 1.09, 2.06) over lag 0-2 days. Temperature drop (TCN = - 4 °C) also increases the risk of acute glaucoma (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.67) over lag 0-7 days, comparing with no temperature change. Patients of female and above age 65 were more vulnerable to cold exposure and temperature drop. This case-crossover study provided novel and robust individual-level evidence that low ambient temperature and temperature drop significantly increase the acute glaucoma risk. The findings provide protective strategies for glaucoma patient, especially for female and the old, under cold exposure and sudden temperature decline.

(1) Background: The acute effects of ozone, cold temperature and particulate matter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) in size related to asthma attacks are well known worldwide. The adverse effects of ozone and cold temperature on asthma morbidity in Taiwan are still inconclusive. (2) Methods: This retrospective study included patients who had asthma emergency room visits (ERVs) from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019 in a regional hospital in Taiwan. The short-term negative effects were estimated using Distributed Lag Non-Linear Models (DLNMs) for the relative risks (RRs) of asthma ERVs associated with PM2.5, ozone and cold temperature exposures within 5 days. (3) Results: There was a significant association between a 10 ppm increase in PM2.5 exposure and asthma ERVs at a 2-day lag (RR 1.166, 95% confidence interval (C.I.): 1.051-1.294). There was a significant association between ozone and asthma ERVs at a 1-day lag (RR 1.179, 95% C.I.: 1.034-1.345). The ambient temperature in cold weather compared with the temperature of minimum asthma ERV showed an RR of 1.214, 95% C.I.: 1.009-1.252 at a 1-day lag. (4) Conclusions: This study provides evidence that short-term exposure to fine suspended particulates, ozone and inverse temperature is associated with asthma exacerbation.

White adipocytes can be transformed into beige adipocytes through the process of browning under cold exposure. To investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of cold exposure on subcutaneous white fat in cattle, in vitro and in vivo studies were performed. Eight bulls of Jinjiang cattle breed (Bos taurus) aged 18 months were allocated to the control group (n = 4, autumn) or the cold group (n = 4, winter) by different slaughter seasons. Biochemical and histomorphological parameters were detected in blood and backfat samples. Subcutaneous adipocytes from Simental cattle (Bos taurus) were then isolated and cultured at a normal body temperature (37 °C) and at a cold temperature (31 °C) in vitro. In the in vivo study, cold exposure stimulated subcutaneous white adipose tissue (sWAT) browning by reducing adipocyte sizes and up-regulating the expression levels of browning-specific makers (UCP1, PRDM16, and PGC-1α) in cattle. In addition, cold-exposed cattle displayed lower lipogenesis transcriptional regulator levels (PPARγ and CEBPα) and higher lipolysis regulator levels (HSL) in sWAT. In the in vitro study, cold temperature inhibited subcutaneous white adipocytes (sWA) adipogenic differentiation by reducing lipid contents and decreasing the expression of adipogenic marker genes and proteins. Furthermore, cold temperature led to sWA browning which was characterized by increased browning-related genes, mitochondrial contents, and mitochondrial biogenesis-specific markers. In addition, p38 MAPK signaling pathway activity was stimulated by the incubation in cold temperature for 6 h in sWA. We concluded that the cold-induced browning of the subcutaneous white fat was beneficial to the production of heat and the maintenance of body temperature regulation in cattle.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Existing studies on the association between temperatures and cardiovascular deaths have been limited in geographic zones and have generally considered associations with total cardiovascular deaths rather than cause-specific cardiovascular deaths. METHODS: We used unified data collection protocols within the Multi-Country Multi-City Collaborative Network to assemble a database of daily counts of specific cardiovascular causes of death from 567 cities in 27 countries across 5 continents in overlapping periods ranging from 1979 to 2019. City-specific daily ambient temperatures were obtained from weather stations and climate reanalysis models. To investigate cardiovascular mortality associations with extreme hot and cold temperatures, we fit case-crossover models in each city and then used a mixed-effects meta-analytic framework to pool individual city estimates. Extreme temperature percentiles were compared with the minimum mortality temperature in each location. Excess deaths were calculated for a range of extreme temperature days. RESULTS: The analyses included deaths from any cardiovascular cause (32 154 935), ischemic heart disease (11 745 880), stroke (9 351 312), heart failure (3 673 723), and arrhythmia (670 859). At extreme temperature percentiles, heat (99th percentile) and cold (1st percentile) were associated with higher risk of dying from any cardiovascular cause, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and heart failure as compared to the minimum mortality temperature, which is the temperature associated with least mortality. Across a range of extreme temperatures, hot days (above 97.5th percentile) and cold days (below 2.5th percentile) accounted for 2.2 (95% empirical CI [eCI], 2.1-2.3) and 9.1 (95% eCI, 8.9-9.2) excess deaths for every 1000 cardiovascular deaths, respectively. Heart failure was associated with the highest excess deaths proportion from extreme hot and cold days with 2.6 (95% eCI, 2.4-2.8) and 12.8 (95% eCI, 12.2-13.1) for every 1000 heart failure deaths, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Across a large, multinational sample, exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures was associated with a greater risk of mortality from multiple common cardiovascular conditions. The intersections between extreme temperatures and cardiovascular health need to be thoroughly characterized in the present day-and especially under a changing climate.

Since the global demanding of natural melatonin-enriched milk has been significantly increased in the populations of children and elder, the accurate and quick melatonin detection from milk is urgently required. Thus, the regular methods no longer satisfy this requirement. In the current study, we reported a novel method to extract melatonin from milk for liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry melatonin detection. This novel method was to use cold methanol (-20℃) to precipitate proteins and fat in milk with one step to extract melatonin. Compared to the regular methods, it was devoid of procedures of sample drying, solid phase extraction and sample reconstitution. It could short the extraction time from the regularly 150 min to 60 min/per 24 milk samples. We believe that this novel method provides a possibility to detect large scale of milk samples in relatively short time with more efficiency and less cost compared to the regular method.

BACKGROUND: There is no standardized storage temperature of whole blood for acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study to examine the difference in platelet function between short-term whole blood storage at 4 and 22°C. Venous blood (40 ml) was collected from seven healthy subjects who gave prior written consent. The samples were divided into three groups: before storage (group Pre), cold (4°C) storage (group C), and room temperature (22°C) storage (group R). Groups C and R were tested after 6 h of blood storage. Platelet aggregability, platelet factor 4 (PF4), ß-thromboglobulin (ß-TG), P-selectin expression, pH, PO2 , PCO2 , glucose, lactate, blood count, and thromboelastography (TEG) parameters were measured. The percentage change in each parameter in groups C and R was calculated using the value in group Pre as a reference. These data were then compared between groups C and R using a Wilcoxon matched pairs test. p < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: Compared with group R, group C showed significantly higher platelet aggregability with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) 2, 4, and 6 µM (all p = 0.016) and collagen 1 µg/ml (p = 0.047) stimulation, and significantly lower PF4 and ß-TG elevation (both p = 0.031), glucose consumption (p = 0.031), and lactate production (p = 0.016). The ADP channel in TEG showed a significant increase in platelet aggregation rate in group C compared to group R. DISCUSSION: Cold storage of whole blood in ANH may provide improved storage conditions for platelets and contribute to improved hemostasis compared to room temperature storage.
